About the EGGS contact databaseThe contact database was originally compiled following the 18 months of intensive research leading up to the June 2000 reunion. During that period the research team identified over 1,500 ex-EGGS people out of the (approximately) 2,000 that ever attended the school during its 18-year existence. PurposeThe sole purpose of the database is to maintain and supplement the records from the 2000 reunion in order that future events can be organised more easily. The database is a record of people from Eliots Green that: - can be contacted
- do not wish to be contacted
- cannot be contacted
Security and ConfidentialityIn order to keep records secure and confidential, it is necessary for users to be registered and logged-in via the forum before access is allowed. This is a highly secure method of authentication, passwords are encrypted and are not stored in a readable format. These measures effectively prevent any public access to the database. In addition, logged in users can only view and edit their own database record but can view very limited status information about other individuals, i.e. whether they have been located or not, and whether they are contactable or not. Contact details of other individuals are not displayed unless those individuals have elected to make their details available to other database users. Information about youPlease click here to see an example record. If you are not a registered forum user but you wish to review your own record on the database, I will provide you with a printed copy (if it exists). Please send a signed request, together with a stamped & addressed envelope to: Opting outIt is recognised that not everyone from the school is interested in reunion events. Rather than simply delete their records (which might lead to someone else in the future trying to find them again - a waste and irritation to everybody concerned!) I believe that it is better to simply mark the fact that the person involved does not wish to be contacted and obscure their contact details. If at a future time they change their mind it is a simple matter for them to log back in and restore their record. However, if anyone really does wish to be permanently ‘deleted’ then they have only to ask by writing to me at the above address. Data Protection Act 1998I have been in touch with the Office of the Information Commissioner to discuss whether this database fell within the terms of the UK Data Protection Act 1998 and required registration. I was advised by them that as the database holds membership information for non-commercial domestic purposes, it is exempt from the provisions of the Act. The database has nevertheless been designed to incorporate the Data Protection Principles set out in the Act. |
